Hard to believe; but Arduino released their Arduino Starter Kit just over five years ago.
It was the time when thousands of computer nerds got all excited about using the Arduino platform; where they could wire various sensors and actuators to a breakout board and then program a micro-controller to control the physical world - the fifteen projects were worked through so quickly; we simply wanted more and more - and so the platform has evolved.
While marketed as an introduction to IoT - none of the projects involved Internet connectivity.
Keeping it simple was the key to the success of the Arduino starter kit. Of course; there were shields you could purchase (Ethernet, WiFi, 3G/GSM) where you could setup a server on the Internet and hopefully know enough about the HTTP protocol to send messages back and forth. However; while the examples worked; the libraries supporting the shields were full of software flaws - unless you could fix them; progress was not going to happen.
This is why we created RIoT Fusion - making Internet connectivity for IoT simple!
Fusion is a hardware abstraction module based on off-the-shelf components - specifically designed to simplify how developers connect their IoT devices to the Internet. Developers should really be focusing on connecting sensors and actuators to GPIO ports and writing simple IFTTT (if-this-then-that) application logic related to the thing they are building.
Fusion provides an SPI (Serial Peripheral Interface) connection for the developer to interact with a virtual network device; our modules handle the complexities of creating and maintaining an Internet connection. As an added bonus - the network device provides a VPN tunnel; meaning all data transmitted to and from the thing to the cloud is secure.
Fusion can act as a bootloader for the provision, OTA (over-the-air) updates and erasure of firmware for specific micro-controllers - paving the way for secure device lifecycle management.
